Jee-van

A Data Collection Game on Social Protection Needs of Communities

What if communities could articulate what kind of resilience mechanisms works for them? Could that help policy strategize for resilience with more nuance?

Jee-van is a game that helps people explore their expenditure priorities and their preferences for social protection measures across various scenarios.

Set in a fictional world, players manage their own orchard and make decisions such as allocating resources to maintain the health of their trees, enhance earning potential, and secure the future of their orchard. As they navigate different shocks—such as climatic events or loss of livelihood—players make strategic choices to safeguard their well-being.

Throughout the game, data is collected on participants’ spending priorities and their preferences for social protection, especially in times of crisis.

Developed to support civil society organisations, the game provides insights into how communities prioritise their spending during normal times and in response to shocks. It helps identify which expenses are considered essential, and what kind of support individuals need from social protection systems.

Jee-van empowers communities to express their needs and preferences, while enabling organisations to use this data for evidence-based advocacy and to inform programme and policy design.

The game can be customised with data tailored to specific communities and can include a variety of relevant social protection schemes and shock scenarios.
